Getting started with a smart home can feel complicated at first. The SmartThings app helps you add and control thousands of Samsung and partner devices with just a few taps. In this guide, you’ll learn how to add devices to SmartThings using the Samsung SmartThings app.
The SmartThings app lets you add and control thousands of Samsung and partner Works with SmartThings devices with the tap of a button from anywhere in the world. While many devices can be added directly to the SmartThings app, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub.

SmartThings lets you add different kinds of devices using the app or the SmartThings hub. The exact steps for adding your device depend on the manufacturer of the devices and the device type.
Note: When you first open the app, a pop-up may appear prompting you to add your device. Tap Add now to continue and skip steps 1 and 2.
To add a device, follow these steps:
From the Devices tab, tap Add (+).
Choose one of the following options:
Make sure the device is put into pairing mode according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Wait a few moments while your device is set up and tap Done once it has been added.

Supported devices can vary by region. To check which devices are supported in your region:
You and your shared members can view and control devices directly using the SmartThings app. The available features depend on the manufacturer and the device itself.
Your favourite devices can be selected from the Favourites tab. You can also view all devices by selecting Devices from the navigation bar.
While viewing a device, select the More options (⋮) button to edit the name or settings.
Device groups allow you to control similar devices as if they were one device.
Device groups are only available for cameras and lights. You need at least two devices.
If a device is not responding correctly in the SmartThings app, you may need to remove and reset the device or integration.
When removing Z-Wave devices, your hub will enter exclusion mode and you will perform the reset process for the device.
Cloud-based connections may also need to be removed separately.
